POSTED ON 1/10/11 | Sport Court® has been selected as the playing surface for the 2011 Tiger Street Football Tournament. This first-ever event kicks off with regional games April 16-17 in the Tiger Football Stadium in Ngee Ann City in the heart of Singapore’s shopping district. Regional play will continue on Sport Court surfaces, including the Grand Finals in September in Kuala Lumpur.

The competition will be played on approximately 2500 square feet of Sport Court’s SportGame™ surface in Titanium color, in keeping with the “street theme” of the event.

“Street football will showcase for the first time a specially-designed football pitch and competition format,” said ESPN STAR Sports Vice President Harvey Davis. “It is basically soccer being played in a caged, hard-court pitch without side-lines. It makes for a continuous state of play and exciting action.”

“This is a very fast-moving game and requires a particularly responsive surface. Our SportGame met the specifications for this exciting form of street football,” said Ryan Burke, International Business Manager for Sport Court. “It allows these elite athletes to push their limits on a surface proven to be safe,” he added. “The competition is organized with the goal of elevating the level of play and passion for football on the streets of Singapore, as well as in China, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam—countries that will host subsequent legs of the inaugural competition,” said Elgen Kua, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, ESPN STAR Sports. ESPN STAR Sports reaches over 300 million viewers in Asia.

Said Wong Mei Wai, Head of Marketing, Asia Pacific Breweries, Singapore, “Tiger Street Football affirms our commitment toward creating unforgettable experiences for fans here in Singapore and around the world. This will be an excellent opportunity for fans here to participate in and witness a new and exciting dimension to the sport. At the same time, fans will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the event and be part of the fun-filled weekend.”

Thirty two teams will play in the Singapore Street Football tournament, with the champions qualifying for the Grand Finals to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in September. Cash prizes are awarded.

Prior to the Grand Finals, other rounds in the Tiger Street Football Tournament will be played in Bangkok, Thailand in May; Guangzhou, China in July; and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in August.

“Sport Court surfaces—both indoor and outdoor—have been the only approved futsal surface by the Asian Football Confederation and have been the official AFC Futsal Championship floors since 2004,” said Ron Cerny, President and CEO of Connor Sport Court International, developers and manufacturers of the playing surfaces. The company is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.
