FISU Executive Committee proposes 10-year Strategy

Lausanne; 08 March 2016: Last Friday the International University Sports Federation (FISU) voted to develop a strategic plan to guide its operations over the next 10 years. The decision to create the “FISU Strategy” represents the main outcome of FISU’s first Executive Committee meeting since Oleg Matytsin’s election as President in November 2015.

The meeting took place in Brussels from 4-5 March and included discussions and presentations across all areas of FISU’s activities.

Each FISU stakeholder will have the opportunity to provide input on the FISU Strategy and each will be relied upon to implement it as well.

FISU President, Oleg Matytsin, said:

“I am pleased to announce that we will soon start developing the FISU Strategy for the next 10 years. This will define our strategic goals and act as a detailed roadmap for achieving them. Our strategy is dictated by our vision, which is: to create a world where University sport has positively shaped the majority of leaders in society. Creating and executing a long-term strategy like this is a game changer for FISU and I am very excited to be starting work on it immediately.”

At the meeting in Brussels, the Executive Committee also re-defined the age limits for students competing at FISU-owned sport events. From 2018, students competing in a FISU-owned sport event must be aged between 17 and 25. The previous age limits for students competing in a FISU-owned sport event are between 17 and 28.

The key report at the meeting came from the Secretary General/CEO Eric Saintrond, who, among other points, highlighted the success of FISU’s new marketing strategy, saying:

“I am delighted to inform you that since November, FISU has negotiated a contract with Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company and we are in the process of finalising our partnership. We have also recently agreed a deal with the United Transport and Forwarding Company (OTEKO). This is on top of our other commercial partnerships with Taishan Sports Industry Group, Qiaodan Sports, Gerflor, Sport Court and Molten.”

Executive Committee members also heard updates on the upcoming Universiades in Almaty (Winter Universiade) and Taipei (Summer Universiade) in 2017, and in Krasnoyarsk (Winter Universiade) in 2019.  The city of Naples (in Campania, Italy) also made a presentation to the Executive Committee as part of its bid to host the Summer Universiade in 2019.

The Deputy President of the Campania Region, Fulvio Bonavitacola, said:
“There is a great opportunity for Naples and Campania to host the 2019 Summer Universiade. If we are awarded the hosting rights, we will do our utmost to ensure the success of the 2019 Summer Universiade - and to promote the development of University sport in Italy and around the world. We are working very hard to fulfil the conditions and requirements set by FISU and we are hopeful of bringing this prestigious event to our wonderful city.”

The next FISU Executive Committee meeting will be held from 18-20 October 2016 in Taipei.
